SAVING SHEPARD’S PIE FOR MY NEXT VISIT

March 27, 2010

i returned from england two weeks ago. memories are still vivid and i’m tightly clinging onto them. it was a completely different world. it was visiting a land of houses of bricks and big cups of coffee (love both). land of really nice and open-minded people, amazing architecture and opportunities for everyone. enthusiastic runners in shorts when there’s only 5 degrees. and funny but real good advertising. i’ve met some great people, saw gutenberg machine (the supposed replication of it; imagined it bigger), squirrels at hyde park, van doesburg exhibiton. ate carrot cake, felt dizzy watching the roof in british museum. all in all had a blast and would love to spend some more time to see also that and that. and learn.

gave “avavaviva/wow/nothing-like-it” lessons on this great few days to friends, family. and now they’ll all keeping fingers crossed they can sleep over soon, hihi.

MAKE UP YOUR (AND MY) MIND

March 2, 2010

these two photos were made in the past week. so i’m blaming the weather for my moodiness (or is it that the weather is moody because i am?). from morning fog to rain/to sunny days, rainbow, back to cold snow. at the moment i’m approving only sun. no more wet feet no more blowing in the hands no more red nose. and then “in the spirit of the zeitgeist” just as i thought i’ll be having leisurely days last week, to enjoy the fresh rural air, to cook lunch for the family, to make a pie or two, to work on some things for the faculty i still have left, i got a preposition for work. i’m glad that i excepted the offer (hvala, tjaša). it feels good when you’re concentrated on work again (surely at home you can find million of excuses and distractions) and in the evening just fall into bed, maybe want to watch a series/movie but you fall asleep in the middle.

i’m looking forward to 9th march when i’m flying to london and attending the open day at the typography department at university of reading on 11th. and i’ll be having my mouth open and shaking my cup of coffee seeing all these talented and incredible people. but i’m excited. and the rest of the days are left for london’s architecture and van doesburg exhibition at tate. and shepard’s pie and jello pudding. whatever comes along. the good times.
vamos!

HISTORY MADE US

February 19, 2010

again watched the documentary Stephen Fry and Gutenberg Press on genius johannes gutenberg by bbc from 2008. i sincerely recommend it to everyone. it’s a great way to witness how important the invention of movable type was and therefore the mass production of books, rise of literacy. the amazing thing is that in the documentary everything was completely build up and made from scratch for the documentary: the paper, engraved letters (and matrices) and the great big machine (of which there was no illustration so they oriented and followed the example of one dürer’s illustration of a printing machine). and it truly is “Printing history goodness all round”. because documentary is subtitled the machine that made us i tried to follow the printscreen and sketch the title in blackletters.

among other things of the past days is the OLE “shout” from the ted talk by elizabeth gilbert below. and because i’m reading a book on grids i got kinda more sensitive to it. watching floor in my appartment, playing with toast …

WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO

February 14, 2010

i feel lost.
a word from a friend and this great talk on creativity kicked me in the butt. heading to make me a cup of coffee and grab a pencil. and sun’s boasting outside, after a long time. yes, i’ll have a long walk first. ole ole ole and hiphiphurray to nature and Elizabeth Gilbert!!

Elizabeth Gilbert on nurturing creativity

update: because i don’t check daily on the bookmarks, it was great when heading to ISO50 page (the blog of scott hansen, a remarkable guy) and found a great article overcoming creative block on how to get back in the working process when hitting the “creative block”. in the article there are presented 25 strategies how to overcome this, asking 25 most inspiring creative people.

NEW CYCLE

January 7, 2010

has the first week of new year been a good one? mine was mighty fine. i found letraset at home. have my own piece of helvetica now. priceless!! finished my seminar on emigre (THEE emigre, and must admit got the chills of trying something like it myself with few friends, must bring on at that brainstorming table) and for new years went to a little cottage for two days. first day was crowded, new years first was the best. like a family gathering. I started my “march on 2010″ with a great walk, the best view you can imagine to start the flow of ideas and imagination on what can we accomplish. just hope the spirit and happy thoughts stay with me. oh, the necessity of ups an downs, hihi …

finished my typography classes. eventhough i don’t get any mark because i am not signed as a postgraduate student (profesor allowed me to attend classes and cooperate) it was magical. it is a sort of a privilege to have in your week just things you love (typography and swedish). and at first when it’s hard to come to ljubljana, feeling cosy at home, still have a bigger “sense of belonging” there, days in ljubljana go by so fast and i enjoy them. let’s wait and see where i end up.

open horizons, let’s conquer the world!

THE SMELL IN THE AIR

December 21, 2009

what’s better in winter than walking on snow and listening to the squealing sound you make? it was really cold past days, but it felt so good shoveling snow and feel the chills while running inside and change trays of cookies in the oven. it smells of good days and i know it will be better to spend the christmas and new year rush in this little village than in the city getting lost in the crowd. and try out some more yummy recipes. and take time for friends. in between try to keep up with the work. i’m working on a seminar on émigré magazine at the moment and becoming even a bigger fan of zuzane licko. and on a new typeface and some other ideas. i have a good feeling. and occasional dizziness from the roalercoaster of plans i’m making.
again watched coffe and cigarettes by jim jarmusch. reminds me of all the little talks that can make your day. and saw andy warhol and annie liebovitz exhibitions in austria. they just remind you to always keep your eyes open and pick up ideas wherever possible.

day couldn’t possibly end any better, having good vibes in my head and limbo in my heart.

look what we have this year in our appartment in ljubljana instead of a christmas tree.
